Co-operative Sector Recognized for
Progressive Employment Practices
October 30, 2003 - MediaCorp Canada and Maclean's
recently pre-released the listing of Canada's Top 100
Employers, and the co-operative sector again figures
prominently in the rankings. Co-operative Trust Company
of Canada, Credit Union Electronic Transaction Services
(CUETS) and Cooperators Life Insurance Company are listed
among the best places to work in Canada. It's the third
year in a row for all three companies, which is a strong
testament to co-operative sector workplace policies
and practices.
The book - among the best-selling business books in
Canada -- recognizes those organizations across the
country that are industry leaders in making innovative,
well-received changes in the workplace. More than 51,000
companies were considered for a spot on the list, with
6,000 being evaluated on the basis of the following
criteria:
- Sustained growth
- Stimulating work environment
- Employee feedback mechanisms
- Communication efforts to employees
- Employment benefits and vacation allowances
- Employer dedication to attracting and retaining
outstanding employees
Myrna Bentley, Chief Executive Officer of Co-operative
Trust Company of Canada, commented: "This acclamation
is a natural extension of who we are. Co-operatives
are about concern for community and working together.
Whether that community is composed of staff, clients,
the co-operative system or people in need, we embrace
workplace practices that make a difference and set new
benchmarks."
"We are very proud and honoured to once again
be listed as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers,"
said Dan Thornton, Chief Operating Officer of Co-operators
Life. "As the list shows, the co-operative sector
is a strong, vital and important player in our communities.
Our positive workplaces and pro-active human resource
policies continue to make us employers of choice and
a solid reason for individuals and families to stay
right here in Saskatchewan," he added.
Stan Kuss, Chief Executive Officer of CUETS, highlighted
the contribution of the three organizations and other
cooperative sector employers to the community. "As
the researchers noted, companies that do an exceptional
job of supporting their local communities also tend
to provide first-rate support for their employees. From
my experience, this support for employees translates
directly back into higher levels of customer service
for our clients and even higher levels of employee involvement
in the community."
